Meter, settlement and grid data that reconcile
Meter data, settlement and grid integration for organisations where a rounding error becomes a regulatory finding.
Context
Technology in Energy & Utilities
We build meter data platforms, settlement and billing components, distributed energy integration, and the operational reporting that market rules require. Volumes are unforgiving: half-hourly settlement across a domestic portfolio produces billions of readings a year, arriving late, out of order and sometimes twice, and the correct answer must still reconcile with what the market says you owe.
Correctness under late-arriving data is the whole engineering problem, so we design for restatement from the start rather than bolting it on. If your immediate pain is a billing engine holding nine hundred undocumented tariff rules, do not begin with a rewrite. Begin with rule extraction and a shadow calculation running against live accounts until the differences are explained; only then is a replacement a safe conversation.
- 4.7B
- interval readings processed per year on a settlement platform we run
- £0.00
- unexplained variance at cutover after nine months of shadow billing
- 18 sec
- median dispatch signal latency to distributed battery assets
Challenges
What actually keeps this sector awake
Not generic disruption — the specific constraints that shape every technology decision here.
Settlement reform and meter data volume
Market-wide half-hourly settlement moves the industry from monthly estimates to interval data for every meter. Systems built for twelve reads a year now face seventeen thousand, and the estimation logic that hid data gaps is no longer acceptable.
Operational technology that predates IP security
SCADA and protection systems speaking IEC 61850, DNP3 or Modbus, on networks designed for isolation that no longer exists. NIS2 and equivalent duties require monitoring and segmentation without adding latency to control loops.
Billing engines nobody dares to change
Legacy tariff logic accumulated over two decades, with regulatory price caps and social tariffs layered on top. A miscalculation is not just a defect; it becomes redress, reporting and a supervisory conversation.
Distributed generation changing the flow
Rooftop solar, batteries and vehicle charging turn passive connections into two-way ones. Forecasting, network visibility and flexibility dispatch now need sub-hourly data from assets the utility does not own or control.
Approach
How we address them
Meter data platform designed for restatement
Immutable raw readings, versioned derived series, and recalculation that can be replayed for any settlement run with a full audit of what changed and why. Late and duplicate reads are expected inputs, not incidents.
Shadow billing before replacement
Existing tariff rules extracted, documented and re-implemented as testable logic, then run in parallel against live accounts. Cutover happens per tariff family once differences are down to explained rounding, not on a project deadline.
Flexibility and DER integration
Asset telemetry, dispatch signals and availability tracking with clear separation between the control path and the analytics path, so a reporting outage never touches operational instructions to a battery or a charging site.
OT monitoring without touching the control loop
Passive network monitoring, asset discovery and segmentation designed with control engineers, plus a tested incident path that names who can isolate what. Nothing we deploy sits inline with a protection scheme.
